Today Andrew, Dwayne, Mitch Fearnley and I reviewed the Hāpuku river track. With the help of LiDAR imagery provided by Mitch, we could see detailed contour lines at small intervals, which helped us assess potentially better locations for the track for flood resistance.
We’ve decided to rebuild the Hāpuku track close to its original location for now. Some adjustments will be made, and a bridge may be required in places. We’ll continue looking at the possibility of retreating to higher ground, though this isn’t straightforward and would bring the trail close to private property boundaries.
Fingers crossed, the rebuilt path should last another ten years or so. Most of the repair work can be done with hand tools — shovels, rakes, grubbers, pry bars and chainsaws.
Thanks again for all your support.
