Because of essential post-earthquake repairs to the Kowhai Rail Bridge, there is currently no access under the bridge.
Unfortunately, there are no diversion or bypass opportunities to get past the work area so the best thing we can do is keep out of the way so work can be completed.
Cycling upriver through the trees beside the Golf Course, it is possible to do a loop behind the Golf Course and out through Ocean Ridge to rejoin the trail back to town.
Access to the Trail upriver of the bridge will need to be by Kowahi Ford Rd, Schoolhouse Rd or Postmans Rd. You can ride down the trail toward the Kowhai Rail Bridge but will have to do a return trip back up river.
We have been advised that work may take until November.
Please KEEP OUT of the area and be respectful of workers.
Remember that crossing the railway anywhere other than a crossing is trespass and you can be prosecuted with a fine of up to $10,000.
Be patient and we'll be back to full trails soon!

Quote from this publication:
The repair work means a walking and cycle track, the Kowhai Trail, will be closed at the site as it passes beneath the bridge on the river’s northern bank. When work is finished on first piles, the team will assess whether the track can be safely reopened while work continues on the bridge.
